Farouk Lawan, a former member of the House of Representatives in Nigeria, has been released from Kuje Prison after serving a five-year sentence for bribery. His release was confirmed by Samson Duza, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service, FCT Command.
Lawan was convicted in 2021 for accepting a $500,000 bribe from businessman Femi Otedola, aimed at removing Otedola’s company from a list involved in fuel subsidy fraud.
The Supreme Court upheld Lawan’s sentence in January, dismissing his appeal after a previous ruling by the Court of Appeal affirmed his conviction.
