In a Stressed World, Can a Humor-Based App from Nigeria Be the Answer?

Our phone screens are a source of constant tension. From breaking news alerts to the curated perfection of social media, our digital lives are often a relentless source of anxiety and stress. Amid this global climate of doomscrolling and digital fatigue, an unlikely antidote has emerged from the vibrant tech hub of Lagos. It’s called Zagasm, an app with a simple, radical mission: to make you laugh. Founded by GU Abraham, this new platform raises a profound question: in a world overwhelmed by stress, can a humor-based app from Nigeria be the answer we need?

The typical social media experience is a minefield of comparison, conflict, and information overload. We scroll through feeds that are algorithmically designed to keep us engaged, often at the expense of our mental well-being. Zagasm proposes a fundamentally different relationship with our screens. By dedicating its entire ecosystem to comedy—skits, memes, and stand-up clips—it offers a curated sanctuary from the negativity. The hypothesis is that a feed filled with joy is not just a distraction, but a form of digital wellness. It’s an intentional space to decompress, smile, and experience a moment of uncomplicated relief.

That this idea comes from Nigeria is significant. Nigerians are globally renowned for their resilience and their ability to find humor in the face of immense daily challenges. This app can be seen as a cultural export of that very spirit. “We live in a world with serious problems, but in Nigeria, we’ve always understood that laughter is a survival mechanism,” said founder GU Abraham. “It’s a tool for connection and sanity. We wanted to bottle that spirit and share it with the world.”

Of course, no app can single-handedly solve the global mental health crisis. Skeptics might argue that Zagasm is simply another form of digital escapism. It can’t replace therapy or meaningful human connection. However, perhaps it doesn’t need to. Instead of being the answer, it can be an answer—a small, accessible tool for daily stress management. In the same way we might take a short walk to clear our head, a five-minute scroll through a feed dedicated to laughter could become a go-to mental break.

While Zagasm may not cure all that ails our stressed world, its existence marks a compassionate and necessary evolution in technology. It is a deliberate choice to prioritize joy over outrage, and connection over conflict. By betting on the power of a good laugh, GU Abraham and his team are offering a potent antidote to our digital anxieties, proving that sometimes the most innovative solutions are also the most human ones.
