US Intelligence Links Russian Operatives to Fake Video of Mail-in Ballot Destruction in Pennsylvania

US intelligence agencies have determined that Russian operatives were responsible for creating and disseminating a fake video that falsely depicted someone destroying mail-in ballots in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. This video, which circulated on social media, aimed to undermine the integrity of the upcoming 2024 election and create division among Americans.

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the FBI, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency stated that the video is part of a broader Russian campaign to sow doubt about US elections, echoing tactics used in previous disinformation campaigns. The Bucks County Board of Elections quickly debunked the video, asserting that the materials shown were not authentic.

Experts noted that the video resembles past content from a Russian information operation known as Storm-1516. This operation has previously been linked to misinformation targeting both Democratic and Republican candidates.

Despite the video’s debunking, it gained traction on social media, prompting concerns from local officials and Republican leaders about its potential to mislead voters. The original post has been removed, but copies continue to circulate online. Intelligence officials warn that foreign influence operations are intensifying as the election approaches, with Russia, Iran, and China all attempting to cast doubt on US electoral processes.
