Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa has urged his teammates to gift him a World Cup qualification win as he marks his birthday today, ahead of Nigeria’s crucial clash against the Benin Republic in Uyo.

In a video shared by the Super Eagles on X, the 33-year-old forward said the encounter means more than just three points, calling it “the best birthday gift” his teammates could give him.

“Hello guys, today is the day, and today is my birthday.

“We all know what is at stake when they get and wait for the result of South Africa–Rwanda. I know you can do it.

“This is the best birthday gift that you’re gonna give me, guys. I miss you all. I wish you best of luck,” Musa said.

Musa, Nigeria’s most-capped player, also called on the Eagles to replicate their spirited performance from the last game.

“Hope so far good. I know we can do it. Let’s do it again today. Best of luck,” he said.Related News

The video was uploaded hours before the decisive Group C World Cup qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, where the Eagles must win to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Having failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Nigeria risk missing consecutive tournaments for the first time since their debut in 1994.

They sit third in the group with 14 points, three behind leaders Benin Republic and one adrift of South Africa.

To progress, Nigeria must beat Benin and hope South Africa fail to win against Rwanda in Mbombela.

Even if Bafana Bafana win, the Eagles would still need a convincing victory to secure a play-off spot.

The Eagles will be without Ademola Lookman (suspended), while defenders Ola Aina and Bright Osayi-Samuel are sidelined through injury.

Kick-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.
