A former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Zana Akpagu, has resigned his membership of the African Democratic Congress, citing unresolved court cases and legal uncertainties affecting the party.

In a resignation letter dated April 26, 2026, made available to newsmen on Friday in Calabar, Akpagu explained that the move followed extensive consultations with family, friends, associates and political followers.

“I write to inform you of my resignation of my membership of the African Democratic Congress with immediate effect.

“This decision comes after consultation with family, friends, associates and followers, largely based on the uncertainties arising from the unsettled court cases and legal hurdles placed on the pathway of the ADC,” the letter read in part.

Prof. Akpagu, who served as Vice-Chancellor of UNICAL from 2015 to 2020, is a professor of African and Caribbean Literatures in French and remains a prominent voice in academic and socio-political circles in Cross River State.Related News

He thanked the party for the support and understanding he enjoyed during his time as a member.

“I express appreciation to all members for the understanding and support. Thanks for your understanding”, it stated.

While Prof. Akpagu did not state his next political destination, his resignation has triggered fresh realignments ahead of future electoral activities in Cross River State.

The letter, which was addressed to the ADC Chairman of Ipong Ward in Obudu Local Government Area, Pastor Emmanuel Ugar Ugwakong, was duly acknowledged and signed on behalf of the party.
